UP slates $128 million for capex projects in Nebraska, Oregon

Union Pacific Railroad has announced a $65 million capital expenditure program for Nebraska and a $63.3 million capex program for Oregon this year.

The Class I’s plans for Nebraska include $54.9 million to maintain track and $3 million to maintain bridges.

Key projects include $16.3 million to replace more than 110,500 ties between Grand Island and Fremont; $10.7 million to replace nearly 85,000 ties between Burns and Lodgepole; and $5 million to update track welds between Lewellen and Sutherland.

Over the past five years, UP has spent more than $543 million to strengthen its infrastructure in Nebraska, according to a company press release.

Meanwhile, the Class I’s plans for Oregon include $57.7 million to maintain track and another $5.5 million to maintain bridges.

Key Oregon projects this year will include $10 million to replace more than 71,000 ties between La Grande and Huntington; $9 million to replace more than 64,200 ties between Hermiston and La Grande; and $4.6 million to replace more than 35,100 ties between Odell Lake and Oakridge.

UP has spent more than $308.4 million over the past five years to upgrade its infrastructure in Oregon, company officials said.
