Workers Memorial Day 2018

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio, April 28 — Every year, too many American workers are injured or killed in on-the-job accidents. Countless others get sick or become disabled because of workplace exposures to hazardous materials and conditions. Each year on April 28, we recognize Workers Memorial Day to commemorate and honor these workers and renew the fight for safe workplaces.

Safety is always a top issue for the BLET and its members. We have a long way to go before achieving our goal of zero injuries and zero fatalities in the workplace. Sadly, we lost one of our own earlier this year. Brother Michael Kempf of BLET Division 35 (Jacksonville, Fla.) was killed in the line of duty when his Amtrak train collided with a CSX train tied down in a siding near Columbia, S.C., on February 4, 2018. He was 54 years old.

With Corporate America’s ongoing push to break unions and end the Middle Class, it’s more important now than ever before to get involved with your union, which is the leading advocate for your safety in the workplace.

I ask you to join me today in taking a moment to remember Brother Kempf and all those who have been killed or injured on the job in the past year.
