U.S. rail headcount rises on monthly basis

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — U.S. Class I rail employment levels rose between July and August on higher rail volumes. However, headcount totals are still significantly below year-ago levels. U.S. operations of the Class I railroads employed 117,764 people in mid-August, up 0.46% from July but down by nearly 15.5% from August 2019, according to data provided to the Surface Transportation Board (STB) by the Class I railroads. On a month-to-month basis, the number of transportation and engine (T&E) employees rose by 3.3% from July to August 2020.
