CAMERON, Texas — An 18-wheeler collided into the side of a BNSF train on Tuesday at a grade crossing in Milam County, Texas, sending a ball of flames and thick black smoke into the air. There were no reported injuries. It was a situation that could have been much worse, but the fire did not reach a train car carrying hazardous material. The Milam County sheriff said some homes in the immediate area were evacuated. Preliminary reports indicate that the rail crossing gates and alarms were functioning. Lights were flashing, bells were ringing, and the crossing arms were in the down position. Also, a car was also stopped at the gate. But for unknown reasons, the driver of the 18-wheeler went around the stopped car and crashed into the side of the passing BNSF train.
