U.S. coal demand is rising, but supplies remain tight

HOUSTON — Coal demand and prices are booming as natural gas prices soar, but U.S. mining companies have not ramped up production to meet the new market conditions. The U.S. Energy Information Administration recently said it expects coal demand from the U.S. electric power sector to increase by 100 million tons in 2021 and export demand to rise by 21 million tons compared to 2020. However, the agency also warned that constraints in capacity and transportation will limit the ability of producers to meet that demand.
