Class Is employed fewer people in July

U.S. Class Is as of mid-July employed 115,670 people, down 0.23% from mid-June and down 1.33% from employment levels in mid-July 2020, according to Surface Transportation Board data.

The following five of six employment categories logged decreases last month versus June’s total: maintenance of equipment and stores, down 0.79% to 17,519 workers; maintenance of way and structures, down 0.46% to 28,514; transportation (other than train and engine), down 0.42% to 4,731;  executives, officials and staff assistants, down 0.29% to 7,321; and professional and administrative, down 0.03% to 10,087.

Only the transportation (train and engine) category posted a month-over-month increase — up 0.11% to 47,498 workers.

Transportation (train and engine) was also the only category to log a year-over-year increase; the category’s employment level climbed 6.09%.

On a year-over-year basis, these five categories logged decreases in employment levels: maintenance of equipment and stores, down 10.39%; transportation (other than train and engine), down 6.78%; maintenance of way and structures, down 4.73%; professional and administrative, down 2.83%; and executives, officials and staff assistants, down 2.66%.
