Rail safety expert to address BLET members

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio, June 21 — A safety expert in the field of workplace distraction will address members of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) during the closed portion of its St. Louis regional meeting on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 25.

Randy Jamieson, a managing principal of Atticus Consulting Group, is a former locomotive engineer and Federal Railroad Administration Inspector with the Texas Department of Transportation. He will be speaking to BLET members about the science of human attention and how to identify underlying causes on internal cognitive distractions as well as external workplace distractions. The goal of his presentation is to help BLET members become better able to focus and sustain their attention for longer periods of time while on duty, which will help them get home safely to their loved ones at the end of the day.

Jamieson has over 35 years of experience in safety, operating practices, regulatory compliance, and has presided over safety-related seminars for locomotive engineers, managers, and other railroad workers. Recently, he led a team of experts in conducting comprehensive assessments of workplace distractions in locomotive cabs in the Northeast Corridor as well as Amtrak’s Chicago and St. Louis operations.

“Our Regional Meetings provide an opportunity for education and fellowship among BLET members, and there is no cost for BLET members in good standing to attend this important safety presentation. I encourage all of our BLET Brothers and Sisters in the St. Louis area to attend the closed meeting at 1:30 p.m. Central time on Tuesday, June 25,” BLET National President Dennis R. Pierce said.
