Class I employment levels fell in September

U.S. Class Is employed a total of 114,218 people in mid-September, down 0.19% compared to mid-August’s employment level and down 3.31% year-over-year, according to Surface Transportation Board data. Five of six workforce categories registered month-over-month employment decreases in September. They were: transportation (train and engine), down 0.39% to 46,927 workers; executives, officials and staff assistants, down 0.32% to 7,248; professional and administrative, down 0.22% to 9,831; maintenance of equipment and stores, down 0.06% to 17,195; and maintenance of way and structures, down 0.04% to 28,323. On a year-over-year basis, the number of transportation (train and engine) employees was down 0.23%
